Saturday 9th October

Join our team and guest medium, as we dare to investigate the very haunted Preston Manor.
This is a house with a long line of history. It has gone through many rebuilds and modifications over its long history, but it retains one important documented fact.....A ghost which has been seen here for over 500 years !
Dare you join us as we turn off the lights and carry out our own investigation ?
The Domesday Book of 1086 records that Preston Manor was one of eight manors belonging to the Bishopric of Chichester.
Bishops eventually gave up farming their own manors through a bailiff and started renting them out.
In 1510 the Bishop granted a lease of the Manor of Preston to Edward Elrington. Preston Manor stayed within the Elrington family for over 50 years.
In 1569 it was inherited by Anthony Shirley (a step grandson of Edward Elrington). Anthony’s son Thomas became the first lay lord of the manor, buying back the lease from the Crown who had acquired it in 1561. The house stayed within the Shirley family for at least four generations.
Over the years the house has changed hands many times, with families and servants sharing the living space, and making their own mark on the walls and fabric of the building.
Ghostly sightings:
Tales of ghostly sightings and supernatural experiences at Preston Manor go back through history.
For years the Stanford family had been troubled by inexplicable phenomena – disembodied hands moving up one of the bedposts in the south west room, silk dresses cut into diamond patterns and mysterious figures seen on the staircase.
The lady in white
A séance was held on 11 November 1896. At the séance the medium revealed that messages were being received from a nun called Sister Agnes who had been wrongly excommunicated from the Church and buried in unconsecrated ground outside the house.
A year later when drains at the house were being inspected, the body of a woman was found and the bones were certified as being about 400 years old. Were these the bones of Sister Agnes? They were re-buried discreetly by a local gravedigger.
There is the Lady in Grey who descends the grand staircase with nowhere to go. And a ghost who was seen trying out a child’s toy tractor. Also sightings of non-existent visitors, doors locking themselves, lights turning off for no reason, and a ghostly hand holding onto a doorknob.
'Most Haunted' at the Manor:
Is Preston Manor the most haunted house in Brighton? LIVINGtv’s ‘Most Haunted’ team seemed to think so when they filmed at Preston Manor back in June 2006. The TV crew experienced one of their most active nights of paranormal activity and Yvette Fielding, the show’s host, said ‘We were thrilled by our experiences at Preston Manor. The house has a fascinating history and our investigations were more than fully rewarded. Karl is convinced he was confronted by the Manor’s White Lady!’
Barrie will carry out experiments of new and old techniques to evoke paranormal activity. Dare you volunteer to be part of some of his more extreme experiments?
Join in with group séances, table tipping and more. As with all our events you will have the opportunity to break down into smaller groups and carry out your own investigation, with the help and guidance of our team.
Our ghost hunting equipment will all be made available for your use, and you will be shown how to use it effectively.
You are welcome to bring any ghost hunting equipment of your own, and don't forget your camera and / or camcorder.
