Ever wanted to go on a ghost hunt in a castle that has over 600 years of history?

Join the team and Celebrity Medium barrie John as we explore together this huge medieval Fortress on this cold september night!!

Bolton Castle is a spectacular mediaeval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition since its completion in 1399, its scars bear testament to over 600 years of history, including being besieged during the Civil War in 1645 and Mary, Queen of Scots’ imprisonment in 1569. The castle was built by Sir Richard Le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England and 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton. It has never been sold and remains in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, Sir Richard le Scrope’s direct descendant.

The mediaeval atmosphere of the castle is everywhere, including the rooms in which Mary, Queen of Scots, spent six months of imprisonment during 1568 and 1569. Impressive oak beams more than 600yrs old still support many of the great halls and galleries, walls two metres thick climb upwards to battlements from which Royalist guards defended against their Parliamentary attackers during the Civil War. It was taken by the Parliamentarians in 1645. No mediaeval castle is complete without its dungeon, Bolton's is particularly grim in that it's a hole carved out of rock!

Reported Paranormal activity within the castle ranges from :

Top Bed Chamber:

A woman and child, identified by several groups, including a vigil led by David Wells, of UK Living TV’s ‘Most Haunted’.

Mary, Queen of Scots’ Bed Chamber:

The four poster bed is a composite of an eighteenth and nineteenth century bed. It was given to us, as the four people who had owned it over the preceeding two years had all had vivid hallucinations and nightmares when sleeping in it. Two exorcisms were attempted, both of which went wrong. As the current owners were looking for furniture to fill the rooms, the current Lord Bolton decided to pick it up from the Isle of Man in a horsebox. On returning to the castle, it was re-assembled in Mary, Queen of Scots’ bedchamber and nothing more was thought about it. Until the next time their dogs came to the castle and went into her bed chamber. They went berserk, barking and snarling at the bed.

The Lady in a dark cloak/coat:

She has been seen by the current Lord Bolton, a former caretaker and twice by a lady in the village. There are also many reports of sightings of her here in old books and on the internet, frequently claiming it to be the ghost of Mary, Queen of Scots (although the owners have never heard why it was thought to be her, other than the fact that she was imprisoned here). On the first occasion, Lord Bolton was locking up at about 5.30 in the evening. He saw a lady across the courtyard going into the East Curtain in what he thought was a dark coat. Thinking that it was a visitor still looking round, he waited outside and had a cigarette. Having smoked his cigarette, he waited another five minutes for the lady to finish her tour, but still there was no sign of her, so he went into the east curtain to see what she was doing and found no-one there. There is only one entrance/exit to the east curtain, which he had been standing by throughout.

Exactly the same thing happened, but in the chapel, a couple of years later.

A lady in the village has seen her twice outside the castle and can describe her in more detail, wearing a blouse with a lace collar and a dark cloak.

The Drum Roll:

A group of re-enactors frequently stay in the castle. On one occasion they all heard a drum roll coming from down in the courtyard. There were a couple of children with them, who were in bed in the Great Chamber. Knowing that they had left a drum in the armoury, they thought that one of the children must have crept past them and be fooling around. They then found the door downstairs to be shut and bolted from the inside. One of them rushed upstairs to check on the children and found them all asleep in bed. They went down stairs and found no-one there …quote; The castle was locked up and no-one could have got into the armoury, without passing them.

The Armoury:

A medium once described in detail how she could see three men in the armoury, surrounded by valuables such as silver plates, candlesticks and tapestries, who she thought were plotting. The room is dressed as an armoury and has always been described as such, although when the castle was built, the only access to it was from upstairs in the Guest Hall (now the Tea Room). It is very possible that this room was actually a storeroom for valuables from the Guest Hall, which would be brought out for banquets, although the owners have always claimed it to be the armoury. She had no way of knowing this, but described it exactly as it would have been, if it was indeed a storeroom.
